    • My son Christian really enjoyed the camp. Not only did he learn to play basketball but he got the chance to listen to some awesome motivational speakers. What I really loved about this camp was that no kid was turned away regardless to if they had it or not. I fully support this camp because it has proven that it supports our community.

    • This camp was not just a fun experience for my son, Demond, but an essential learning experience as well. It's rare that you find a camp where the people who run it are so passionate about being there for the kids. Of course, the main focus was basketball but it also taught about working hard, staying positive, staying in school, staying out of trouble and much more. Inspiration goes a long way. My son wanted to wear his T-shirt everyday and for that, I truly Thank them.

      Brooke Faber,ParentSuperb!
    • My daughter, Jayla, learned some of the fundamentals of basketball and most importantly she learned about the obstacles of life from some of the guest speakers. Education before recreation, all while having fun!

      Jermaine Domino,ParentSuperb!
    • My kids Juan and Jared had a great experience at camp last year. It taught them a lot of fundamentals of basketball, learning the ends and outs. They got a chance to learn from someone who not only played pro ball but also high school and college. They got a chance to meet several different kids and develop great relationships with them while attending camp.

  • Squeaky Bio

Carldell Squeak Johnsonis a fun, warm hearted, selfless, and compassionate athlete.

Carldell “Squeaky” Johnson is a fun, warm hearted, selfless, and compassioned athlete. As a recognized altruist, Squeaky’s love for helping others affords him opportunities to impact individuals and children across the world. Known for his cheerful personality, comedic charm, and positive life outlook, Squeaky has changed the moods in many rooms, and the life situations of family members and friends, including his own.

Welcomed with love, Johnson was born on January 28, 1983 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Lonnie Johnson and Elise Ramsey. He grew up in “Skyview,” one of New Orleans East’s roughest neighborhoods. Despite his surroundings, Squeaky managed to avoid trouble with his love for basketball and strong guidance from his father and his coach. While Squeaky’s neighborhood friends were stealing cars and picking fights Squeaky’s coach, Coach Rob Tillman, made sure that Squeaky remained focused on his basketball dreams, whether it was basketball season or not.

Carldell’s dad was not only his father he was the neighborhood’s father. His father attended every game and when he could, practice. During Squeaky’s 11th grade year, his father fell severely ill and was hospitalized. Sadly, what Squeak thought would be a regular hospital visit turned into tragedy. Within minutes of one visit, his father passed due to cancer. No career ending injury could be more impactful, no flagrant foul could hit harder. Emotionally, it was as if Squeak fell victim to an unexpected car wreck; his life was whip-lashed and forever changed. With his father gone, basketball could no longer be Squeaky’s sole focus. He had become the man of the house and was concerned with how he would feed his family and pay bills.

Lost without his dad, Coach Rob stepped in to help Squeaky life stay on course. Coach Rob’s goal was to keep Squeak’s life aligned with his father’s goals: college and basketball. After deep reflection, Squeak decided that he would not be stopped; he would pursue college and basketball as he and his father discussed. His first step – Squeaky transferred from John F. Kennedy High School to Abramson High School where he would be closer to his safeguard, Coach Rob. Squeaky graduated from Abramson High school and attended Salt Lake Community College.

Following his first year, Squeaky enrolled in the University of Alabama- Birmingham, where he played college basketball from 2003 to 2006. During his first season, Johnson led the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio, averaging 3.83 assists for every turnover carried out. In 2006, collegeinsider.com wrote that Johnson was the potential difference maker for the NCAA Defensive-All-American Team. Among other awards, Squeaky was also named C-USA Regular Season Runner-Up, a C-USA Tournament Finalist, and was the All-C-USA Defensive Player of the Year.

After an impressive 2006 college season, Squeak decided to play professional basketball overseas. Johnson played in Belgiums’ Basketball League as well as a professional Mexican team. In 2007, Johnson decided to pursue his NBA dream. He entered the NBA’s Development League to prepare himself for the NBA. There, the Austin Toros in the second round drafted him. With practice and determination, enhanced speed and heightened fundamentals, Squeak joined the San Antonio’s Spurs Summer League in 2009. Although he didn’t make the final roster, Squeak knew that he was one step closer to the NBA. Relentless and dedicated, he headed back to the D-League and continued to master his craft.

One day, he would make it to the National Basketball Association. In December 2011, Squeaky’s dream was realized. He was added to the Hornets training camp roster and later signed with the New Orleans Hornets. Johnson’s very first NBA game was against the two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash. However, the game he remembers most is the night New Orleans played the former world champion Boston Celtics game.

In that game, Squeaky recorded his first NBA point on a technical free throw. Squeak always loved New Orleans. Still, the chant “Squeak, Squeak, Squeak,” proved that New Orleans loved him just as much as he loved it. Squeaky played in 25 games and added a career high nine points against the world champion Dallas Mavericks before the Hornets waived him in February 2012. When his NBA dream came true as a Hornet, Squeaky realized that he was in a position to give back to his community; New Orleans, the very city he loved and grew up in.

His focus began with the youth. As a chess player, Squeak spent time with students at Lusher Middle School where he taught and played chess with members of Lusher’s chess club. In an effort to fulfill his philanthropic desires Johnson partnered with Leila to launch “Squeak Chess,TM” an initiative to teach inner city students in New Orleans and surrounding cities the fundamentals of chess. He also adored his travels to local schools where, as a speaker, he encouraged them to stay in school and to keep education first.

Given his personal experience with basketball as a motivational tool, Johnson will launch his first annual “Carldell “Squeaky” Johnson’s Skills and Drills fatherhood” Basketball camp, which is designed to motivate fatherless children through basketball basics and life-skills. Since his NBA experience, Squeak set new goals and dreams. He knows that with goals, determination, persistence and faith, anything is possible.

His goals include a continued dedication to professional basketball, education advocacy, and a Bachelors of Arts in criminal Justice this summer, from which he is only one class away. Squeak also plans to author a motivational book about his life and how he beat the odds. In it, Johnson will share his story, his relationship to his dad, and how he lost him to cancer.

Optimistic as always, Squeaky Johnson looks forward to the many opportunities ahead. Squeaky is enthusiastic about what he and his team are building and embraces the challenge to make a difference, one day at a time. In his own words, “If I don’t do nothing else, I want to make a difference in some child’s life.” With a champion’s heart and a support system like no other, Squeak continues to love life, basketball, his mentees, his true fans, and the many people he shares it with.
